Into the Cascades & 053 Family Court Review and Recommendation (Agent Amanda Story)

Dear Ted and Jody:

Yesterday was a good day.  I got up in time to shoot a sunrise photo (OK, so it shot it early).  Then I went to breakfast and ran into Ed Therrien and talked to him until he left for Church.  Ed’s goal in life if to make people laugh.  He is good at it.  Then I finished the next proofreading revision of Democratize Money.  It was till early, so I drove up into the Cascades and got a few images.  (The last one is from sunrise.)20170402_7 shot Panorama ns email.jpg20170402_0924 4 shot panorama ns email.jpg20170402_1101 5 shotPanorama ns email.jpg20170402_1109 5 shot Panorama ns email.jpg20170402_095915 ns email.jpg20170402P1052 5 shot pannorama1 ns email.jpg20170402_064033 email.jpgThen I watched the Women’s NACC Basketball final game.  Generally, I find women’s basketball has more finesse than men’s.  Son on balance it was a very good day.

053 Family Court Review and Recommendation

Fiction in 603  words by T. Edward Westen, 2017

Family Court Judge Douglas Henderson looked at Agent Amanda Clarkton with some dismay.  “You are telling me that there are indeed two Jessica Ann Beavertons.  He mother cause this by time lapping her daughter and time lapping herself?

“Cause and proof are two different things and difficult to demonstrate, your Honor,” said Agent Amanda. “But yes, that is the only reasonable explanation for the second one of each.  I find it difficult to determine a motive for Alice Beaverton lapping herself.  But that she did is close to undeniable.

Judge Henderson turned the page of the file in front of him.  “And, there is the possibility that Alice Beaverton did kidnap her daughter and haul her off to an earlier Century.”

“Yes, your Honor.” Agent Amanda hesitated for a moment. “We can produce two witnesses from that Century that saw Jessica Ann with her mother in an RV.”

“What’s an RV?” asked Judge Henderson.

“A motorizes recreational vehicle, sir,” Agent Amanda replied.  In the 20th and 21st Centuries they had homes on wheels that they drove around like personal transport units of the day.”

“You’re kidding,” said the Judge.  “To what purpose? Was housing in such shortage?”

“No, your Honor,” replied Agent Amanda.  “It was a kind of camping without the discomforts of sleeping or eating outside with bugs and critters.”

Judged Henderson shook his head.  He turned another page in the file.  “I see she is thought to have committed something called retroactive plagiarism.  That, is a new one on me.”

Agent Amanda smiled, “It was a new one on me too.  What she did was take published contemporary material back in time and published it under her pen name of Melissa Hickson.  Thus, she stole royalties from contemporary authors.  As near as we can determine she published close to 100 contemporary children’s books. Unfortunately, we can’t yet prove this.”

“Why is this one so difficult to prove?” asked Judge Henderson.

“Stories she stole disappear from contemporary readers, data bases and so when she published, the evidence disappears in our time.  But, we have a technician working on this in the All Writings Data Base,” said Agent Amanda.  “As soon as she has a fix we will take her back to a time when she can implement it and thus have proof.  Quite frankly, sir, Alice Beaverton caught us off guard with this one.

Judge Henderson turned another page on the file.  “Unauthorized duplication of an identity tab.”  He raised an eyebrow.

“Yes, your Honor. We think she had close to a dozen copies made.”  Alice looked bemused and added, “It is a challenge as they identity tabs are valid until revoked.  Who knew to revoke her identity tab?  We are checking up line for all uses of her tab.  Then we will have a specific theft charge to levy.”

“Can’t you just jump several decades or centuries ahead and get the data and bring it back?” asked Judge Henderson.

“Special Agent Fleishman is working on that, sir,” replied Agent Amanda.

“Unless I am missing something, this woman is a major felon.  I can deal with the aspect of the child endangerment, the lapping and time travel.  But everything else is more appropriately handled by a Court of General Criminal Behavior and, of course, your own ATI council.  Accordingly, I will hold the two Ms. Beavertons until they can be properly charged and remanded.  I will hold them under the statutory maximum for child endangerment, 5 years.  Will that give you enough time to get the evidence together?”

Agent Amanda nodded her head and said, “Yes, your Honor, more than enough time.

You have some duplication in the Post Ed, not sure how it happened, I thought I just needed more tea!
It sounds like you are moving to a conclusion in the story, or has Alice got some more tricks up her sleeve?:)

    • Thank you.
I may have been tired, or the cat decided to edit the post after I posted it (she doesn’t know she can’t read) anyway, I am sure to have found a new way to mess up.
The characters in the story give me as much advance warning as they give you. 🙂
      Warmest regards,

  2. Yes I got a double post too, maybe a copy and paste accident! I hope it’s not the conclusion yet!

I like the photo with the road curving around, it’s hard to find such curved roads here. I prefer to look at them than to drive along them though.

Alice is proving to be a master criminal indeed. They should give her a job in the Agency. Poacher turned gamekeeper…

Would you still like me to read through DM for errors? i don’t mind at all, but noted you said you had already done it.

    Best wishes, Pete.

    • Thank you.
Finding places to stop and shot curvy roads is difficult unless one stops in the middle of narrow roads. I avoid stopping at all costs.
Alice does appear to be resourceful.
Hold off one or two days reading the PDF. I will send a cleaner copy then.
      Warmest regards, Theo
