A New Way to Pull a Boat out of the Water

Dear Ted and Jody:

Ann Marie called this morning and made my day. She is back in Iceland. The children loved the light swords and big foot stuffed animals she brought home for them Her next adventure will be to go to the Legoland in Denmark (unless you count a neighborhood yard sale tomorrow in her neighborhood).

Two weeks ago or so, we got a notice from the county that the people who own some property adjoining ours were going to remove 10,000 board feet of timber in preparation for subdividing their property for buildings (a new subdivision). The right of way to their timber is at the end of a 300 foot easement at the north end of our and our neighbors’ properties. Yesterday morning around 7:00 AM the sounds of chain saws broke the morning silence. The easement was being cleared of brush, trees and prepared to be a road into the aforementioned property. Those chain saws are now about 150 feet from our house. I do wonder how long it will take to fell, trim, and clear 10,000 board feet of lumber from the acres to the north and east of us. (In short, how long we will be serenaded by chain saw melodies?) (I also guess, the property owners anticipate an overturning of Griswold v. Connecticut and hence a population explosion to which they can sell building lots.)

I noticed yesterday that Justice Alito has apparently gone fully maga. That is, he is giving the appearance of having lied. It is interesting that those who have adopted Trump as their master (cult leader), are showing the same signs of being above any criticism or laws—it is called arrogance—without bothering with the formality of the election in November. Why should Alito be any different? I also noticed yesterday an explanation for Justice Thomas’s behavior—four million of them. Alito was in second place in the Supreme Court “extra” money race, a distant second.

When I got to the boat ramp this morning one pickup truck with a trailer was in the parking lot. There were at least two people in the truck using the occasional flashlight. There was also a boat tied up and in the water. It did not look fully ready to go out as there was no motor/ores and almost no fishing gear in it . After I had been there for 30 minutes, two men pushing a boat trailer by hand came down the parking lot and proceeded to load the boat on to the trailer and pull it by hand back to where the truck was parked (about a football field away from the ramp).

Another vehicle had entered the parking lot and parked next to the truck where the two men had attached the trailer with boat. From what I could tell, 30 minutes later when I left, they had some sort of mechanical issue with the truck as the hood was up and there was a tool box on the ground.

This morning there were very few clouds. However, the clouds arranged themselves artistically.

It looks like a third sunshiny day in a row today.

That new development so close to your house sounds worrying. I hope it doesn’t intrude too much on your rural idyll.

    Best wishes, Pete.

    • The property south of us, about 40 acres, was cleared about four years ago for development. It has grown over again. I suspect the 10,000 board feet of timber is the main objective for the near and short term future.

      Warmest regards, Ed
